Nursing Cover

I have actually been able to accomplish a few projects with a baby in the house. My plan was to post each project as it was finished...but with said baby in the house there is only so much time in the day.
Now, I understand the whole nursing cover debate.... a debate I see both sides of....however I'm choosing not to debate it with anyone. Mostly because I do see both sides, but mostly because debating just takes to much energy.
I followed a tutorial I found through a nursing blog
http://www.blisstree.com/breastfeeding123/free-pattern-to-sew-your-own-nursing-cover/

This was a very simple project and very inexpensive. Total cost for me was about eight dollars.
Here is my finished product

Why did I choose to cover?? Because I didn't buy forty dollar shirts with holes in them for nursing in public and
I wasn't comfortable with the general population seeing my post-partum belly. Heck, I wasn't comfortable looking at it....I wasn't about to subject it to strangers.
That being said, I only used it for about 6 weeks. I had learned how to hold Brady with a receiving blanket so that I was mostly covered...Once the weather turned warmer I ditched the blanket all together. It was way to hot and I just didn't care what anyone thought...my baby needed to eat! There were a few occasions where I chose to cover...a high school graduation is the only one that I really remember. But, I actually enjoyed nursing in public. I loved seeing other mothers give me a little knowing smile.

Are You Ready for Some Footbal???

Pre-season football season is here...Fantasy drafts are underway......the weather is starting to get cooler..... my magazines are offering up game day recipes..... All signs point to Packer Football in the Householder household!!!

Even Brady is ready to cheer on the Pack!

GO PACK GO!!

My Wet Bags are Here!!

And they are soooooo cute!!
I ordered them from Monique at Sew Fun By Monique. I am making a more conscious effort to buy local, homemade/handmade and support stay at home mothers. Although Monique isn't local to me, she is a SAHM and her products are made by her. All of the items in her shop are beautiful...with wonderful fabric colors and combinations. The best part is...she does custom orders!!! With an extensive collection of fabric to choose from.
I have fallen in love with the Dick and Jane fabric line from Michael Miller. (I think I'm a little late in the game, as it seems to be difficult to find all of the patterns in stock. ) Monique was able to find two very cute fabrics to use for my wet bags.
The way she packaged them made me feel so special : )

This is Moniques' photo .... I didn't want to show you a bag that was currently being used; )
The large bags are for use at home. The will easily hold 2 days of dirty Soft Bums inserts. The small one is for the diaper bag...for changes while we are out and about.
Monique is wonderful to work with and I would definitely recommend checking out her shop and seeing what she can do for you!

The Big Switch

We took the plunge...we switched to cloth diapers.
I know, I know, why in the world would we want to do that!!?? And believe me, when we first talked about it, I was not on board. But, the answer is pretty simple. Every time I threw a diaper in the garbage, I felt like I was throwing money away. It was like putting 3 dollars in the trash on a daily basis. And we are noticing that Brady has inherited my sensitive skin.

I know there is a big debate about if the water and electricity used is counter productive to using cloth diapers. During research we found out that using cloth adds one, sometimes two, loads of laundry per week. Doing an extra load of laundry a week is only a few cents of the monthly utility spenditure. Although this started out as a money saving venture, it definitely feels good knowing that we aren't adding more garbage to the landfills.

I did a lot of research on the different types of cloth diapers that are available and how much it would cost us. It isn't just folding a piece of cloth, pinning it on and throwing on some rubber pants anymore. It is so much easier!! There is a wealth of information available and it can be a bit confusing to sort though. Thankfully there is a local company (Toasty Baby) that was able to come to the house and give a demonstration. This allowed us to be able to feel the diapers and see how they work in person. This also gave us the ability to have some of our questions answered.

After doing cost comparisons on the options we were thinking of using, Prefolds vs. Pocket vs. All in One. I was thinking we would go with prefolds because they are the least expensive to start out with. But you have to buy more as your child grows. The cost of three sizes of prefolds was pretty equal to the supply of pocket diapers. While searching for the best deal and asking some advice on types people were using, we found out about the Soft Bums system. This system is a cover with inserts that snap into place. Giving you the ease of an all in one with the ability to re-use the cover like a prefold system. These are made by a WAHM (work at home mom) in Minnesota. We also bought a couple of pocket diapers to add to our supply.

So here is what our supply looks like:
-SoftBums inserts and doublers-- Each SoftBums comes with 3 inserts and a doubler. This is only a few of our inserts.
-8 SoftBums covers--6 are pictured. Brady was wearing the yellow one and the other white was soiled when he poo'ed this morning.
-Cloth Wipes--To save money and help Bradys skin we won't be using regular wipes. I re-purposed some receiving blankets that had lost their shape and used flannel from my fabric stash. I use a spray I made, along with the cloth and everything goes in the wet bag. Nothing goes in the garbage!!
-2 BumGenius 3.0 pocket diapers--These are very convenient for night time, long drives and people who aren't comfortable using cloth diapers.

Not pictured:
-Diaper Sprayer--Used to spray the poo off the dipe. No swishing in the toilet! You don't even have to touch the poo!
-Wet Bags--Used for storing dirty diapers until washing. I ordered these from Esty.com and they haven't arrived yet.

I've had a couple questions about the cost. The cost can vary widely based on what type of diaper you choose. I won't go into details about our total cost, but it will be a few months before we break even. This is because: We bought a large supple to start. We bought the diaper sprayer, which isn't a necessity. The wet-bags I ordered are a bit expensive. But I didn't like the basic one that is available and chose to special order from a WAHM. That being said, we will also be able to use all of these supplies with future children. You can't say that with disposable!

There was definitely a bit of a learning curve to get past to begin with. Right now the BumGenius are definitely faster to get on. But I'm sure with more practice we'll get faster with the SoftBums.
And lastly, a picture of our chunky-monkey sporting his cloth : )

So, there are many things that we haven't blogged about yet, including swim lessons, cloth diapers and the Indiana State Fair. But here is just a quick video of Brady and his evidently hilarious giraffe.

Columbia Customer Service = SCORE

We have this diaper bag, by Columbia. After changing Brady in the family room at Von Maur last week, I lifted up the changing pad to find the underside soaking wet. Apparently, whomever used the changing station before me didn't clean up after their little one had a spraying issue. I called Columbia and asked if I could order a replacement pad. I really liked the pad that came with our bag. It is a nice big size that when folded stays nice and flat. It also has two waterproof zipper type pockets. As much as I liked it, I knew it wouldn't withstand going through the washing machine.

I called Columbia and asked if I could purchase a replacement changing pad. They connected me to a company called California Innovations and I was sent a replacement pad at no cost to me!
Today I received the Baby Innovations Ultra Comfort Change Station. Complete with "quilted, contoured head rest", a baby wipes container and microban protection. Retail Value of 14.99.

It also features: carry strap with a buckle, a waterproof pocket with zipper, a mesh pocket with velcro running the entire width of the pocket and an additional pocket on the outside with velcro closure.
Because of the way this one folds, it is bulkier than the original. And also seems a bit shorter due to the contoured head rest.
All-in-all, I wish that some other childs' body fluids hadn't gotten on the original pad. But this one is a very nice replacement. And, these days, you just can't beat the superior customer service I was granted by Columbia and Baby Innovations!!

Something other than Brady :)

So we haven't posted much about anything except Brady for a little while, so I figured I would give an update on the garden.

This year we planted pretty much the same things we normally did:
1 - cherry tomato plant + 1 "volunteer" grape tomato from last year :)
1 - Wisconsin 55 tomato
3 - Early Girl tomato
2 - Better Boy tomato
2 - Pimento pepper plants
2 - Banana peppers
2 - Jalepeno pepers
3 - Cucumbers
Some lettuce, carrots, and radishes
All in all, it has been a pretty good year with the cooler weather and more rain, the plants have all looked really good. We have gotten more cucumbers than I think we ever have (probably 15 or so) and the tomato plants are loaded. About 2 weeks ago, we got the first ripe ones, and then this week we have been loaded.

Shawnna canned a couple of jars of tomato with this batch, but we should have having at least this much in another week.
And because, I think some people only come to this blog for Brady updates.... banana peppers make pretty good chew toys.

Thursday:

Decided it was time to drop the mattress to medium setting.

Saturday:

Uhhh...Looks like I should have gone with the lowest setting.
